À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

You will love this book if you enjoy wilderness adventure, daring escapes, and true loyalty between friends. It suits readers who like woodcraft, frontier history, and heroes who win by nerve and kindness.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

Picture a dark river half a mile wide, and five scouts in a boat watching a hundred canoes glide past in the moonlight. At the head sits a chief with folded arms, as straight as the figurehead of an old ship. Henry Ware knows him at once. It is Timmendiquas, the Wyandot called White Lightning.

The Border Watch is the last of eight adventure novels by Joseph A. Altsheler. It follows Henry Ware, Paul Cotter, and their friends through the Ohio country during the American Revolution. The story stands alone, and you get a chase, a duel, a prison, a leap into a river, a storm, and a great march.

Five scouts follow a war fleet north

Henry, Paul, Sol, Tom, and Jim are heading home to Wareville. In the dark, Henry hears a single paddle splash, then the swish of many. The five push their boat into thick bushes and wait.

A fleet of about a hundred canoes passes, carrying perhaps five hundred warriors. In the lead canoe sits Timmendiquas, the great Wyandot chief. Henry feels admiration for him, and some sympathy too. The friends guess that a raid on Kentucky is coming, and they agree to follow.

Later Henry finds a campfire with Shawnee warriors and three renegades, Braxton Wyatt, Simon Girty, and Blackstaffe. Henry could shoot Girty from the dark, and one bullet might save hundreds of lives. He cannot, because he will not shoot a man from ambush. For a week the five shadow the growing fleet until nearly a thousand warriors gather. A watcher who stays on the enemy's trail guards everyone who sleeps behind him.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about La Veille de la frontière

What is The Border Watch about?

It follows Henry Ware and four friends as they track a great Indian and British plan against Kentucky. Along the way Henry is captured, escapes from Detroit, and helps George Rogers Clark's army fight back.

Do I need to read the other books in the series first?

No. It is the eighth and last book, but it introduces Henry, Paul, Sol, Tom, and Jim clearly. You can enjoy the story without knowing their earlier adventures.

Is The Border Watch a true story?

It is a novel, but it uses real people and events, including Clark, Boone, de Peyster, Girty, and the burning of Chillicothe and Piqua. The author says he checked the battles against many historical sources.

Who is Timmendiquas?

Timmendiquas, called White Lightning, is a Wyandot chief and the book's greatest opponent to Henry. He is brave, clever, and honorable, and he leads the allied tribes against the Kentucky settlements.

What is the main message of The Border Watch?

Loyalty and courage carry people through danger, and respect can exist between enemies. The story also shows what the frontier cost both settlers and Native nations, in lives and in lost land.
