À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

This book is for readers who love quick comedy, clever servants, lovers in disguise, and stories where wit beats locks and keys.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What does a rich count do when he is tired of being loved for his money? In Seville, he puts on a plain cloak, takes the name Lindor, and stands under a barred window every morning, hoping a girl he has never spoken to will love him for himself.

The Barber of Seville, or The Useless Precaution, is a comedy by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. It failed badly on its first night in Paris in 1775, and after he cut it from five acts to four, it won its audience. An old doctor guards his ward, and a barber named Figaro helps the count break in through one disguise after another.

Point clé 1 sur 11

A failed first night becomes a hit

The play begins before the first scene, with a letter. Beaumarchais wrote it after the opening night in Paris, when the audience whistled and the play fell flat. He addresses the reader with mock humility and calls himself a man who has to beg for kindness.

He answers a newspaper critic who said the play had no plan, no characters and no comedy. The plan, he replies, is plain. An old man wants to marry his ward tomorrow, and a younger, smarter lover marries her first, right under his nose.

He explains that the play was cut from five acts to four after the rough first night. He pretends he fed the fourth act to the devil of the hissing crowd, and that the noise stopped at once.

The letter shows a writer who laughs at his own fall and fights back with jokes instead of anger. That same spirit runs through the whole comedy.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
