À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers who enjoy clear, organized accounts of Latter-day Saint doctrine, whether Church fellows, students of religion or curious neighbors, and anyone interested in how a believer reasons from scripture.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What do you believe, and why? When asked to explain his people's beliefs, Joseph Smith answered with thirteen short statements. James E. Talmage, a geologist, a chemist and a teacher, took those statements and wrote The Articles of Faith, first published in 1899. It began as lectures to a theology class at the Church University and was prepared at the request of Church leaders. Talmage sets out each belief, gives its reasons, points to scripture and answers likely objections. Let us begin with the first question of any faith: who is God?

Point clé 1 sur 9

God, His Son, and the Holy Ghost

The first article states belief in God the Eternal Father, in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. Talmage argues that these are three separate persons, one in purpose, mind and work. He knows this differs from creeds that describe one being in three persons, and he says so.

He points to the baptism of Jesus. The Son is in the water, the Spirit descends and the Father speaks from heaven. For Talmage, the scene shows three beings at one moment. The Father has a glorified body of flesh and bones, while the Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit.

Talmage claims that God is knowable and near, a Father to whom prayer is addressed as to a parent. Whatever you think of the argument, you will see why Latter-day Saints speak of God as they do.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
