À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
This book suits readers who love origin myths, family chronicles and firsthand accounts of the Spanish conquest. It will please anyone curious about Maya history or how a people holds its memory through loss.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What does a people remember when they have lost their city, and who do they write for? The Annals of the Cakchiquels opens with a father speaking to his children. He promises to set down what the earliest fathers said, when only rabbits and birds lived on the hills.
This is a Maya chronicle from the highlands of Guatemala, kept by the Xahila family. Francisco Hernandez Arana Xajila continued it from 1560 to 1583. You travel from Tulan to Iximche, and you see the Spaniards arrive through the eyes of the people who watched them come.

Point clé 1 sur 11
A family record written for the children
The Annals are not a neutral history. The writer wants the young Xahila to remember who their ancestors were and what those ancestors won.
Its first page calls it the record for the process, meaning a lawsuit. The family seems to have filed its whole history as proof of old privileges. The main writer was already an adult when the Spaniards came in 1524.
He seldom says I. Most of the time he passes on what the ancestors said, with phrases like so they say.
The Annals are a lawsuit, a genealogy and a memory all at once, written to give the next generation a claim to stand on.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.
