Résumé de Allan le vieux
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers who enjoy Victorian and Edwardian adventure, ancient settings and tales of fate and love, with visions, warriors and a struggle for freedom.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
The Ancient Allan is an adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, published in 1920, near the end of his writing life. It brings back Allan Quatermain, the old hunter and trader who tells the story in many of Haggard's African tales. This time the adventure reaches into the far past, to ancient Egypt, a land Haggard loved and had written about before.
The book mixes two worlds. One is the modern, ordinary world in which Allan lives and speaks. The other is a vision of a distant age, full of temples, priests, kings, soldiers and a hunger for love and freedom. You get a tale of danger and fate, told in Haggard's plain, driving style, with a narrator who is always ready to doubt what he sees and yet cannot look away. Let us begin with the figure who holds the whole book together, Allan himself.

Allan Quatermain is the guide
Allan Quatermain is the heart of this book, as he is in Haggard's best-loved adventures. He is an old hunter, shrewd and modest, who has seen much of Africa and has learned to trust what he can touch and test. He does not boast, and he often says that he is a plain man with little learning. That voice makes strange events easier to believe, because the man who describes them is so reluctant to believe in wonders.
Haggard first gave Allan to readers in King Solomon's Mines in 1885, and he kept returning to him for decades. By 1920, Allan was an old friend to many readers. He carries with him the habits of a lifetime in the veld, a dry humour, a respect for courage and a wary eye for human folly. Those habits shape how he meets the new world that opens before him.
The novel leans on that long familiarity. If you know the earlier books, you will hear echoes of them. If you do not, you can still follow, since Allan explains himself as he goes, in the manner of a man telling a tale by a fire.
What matters for the story is that Allan is both witness and actor. He observes with a hunter's care, but he is also pulled into events by feeling and by fate. That tension between the cool observer and the man who cannot stay aloof drives much of the book.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Allan le vieux
What is The Ancient Allan about?
It is an adventure novel in which the old hunter Allan Quatermain is carried by a vision into ancient Egypt. There he faces danger among priests, kings and warriors, and the story turns on love and freedom.
Who is Allan Quatermain?
Allan Quatermain is H. Rider Haggard's recurring hero, an experienced hunter and trader in Africa. He first appears in King Solomon's Mines in 1885 and tells many of the author's adventures in a modest, doubting voice.
When was The Ancient Allan written?
It was published in 1920, late in Haggard's career. It is a work of fiction, not a true story, though it draws on his long interest in Egypt and on the earlier Quatermain tales.
Do I need to read other Allan Quatermain books first?
No. Allan introduces himself as he tells the tale, so you can start here. Knowing King Solomon's Mines or other Quatermain books adds familiarity with his character, but it is not required.
Is The Ancient Allan hard to read?
The plot is easy to follow and the prose is direct, with a quick pace.
