In XXVII, Beaufort’s banking crisis brings disgrace upon his family, and Mrs. Manson Mingott suffers a mild stroke after refusing Regina Beaufort’s appeal for support. Archer prepares to visit Ellen Olenska in Washington, but Mrs. Mingott summons Ellen to New York, and May publicly endorses Archer’s supposed business trip despite the changed circumstances.

What happens

  1. Hopeful reports briefly reassure society, but Beaufort’s misleading claims attract deposits before renewed alarm triggers a bank run.
  2. Despite a possible trial postponement, Archer decides to travel to Washington because he needs to see Madame Olenska.
  3. May summons Archer to Mrs. Mingott’s house after a mild stroke follows Regina Beaufort’s secret appeal for family support.
  4. The family condemns Regina’s request, and Archer accepts the distinction between a wife’s loyalty and society’s duty to reject dishonesty.
  5. Mrs. Mingott asks for Ellen alone, and May writes the telegram and sends Archer to deliver it.
  6. May says Archer should keep his Washington engagement and suggests Ellen’s summons concerns her duty to her husband.
