À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

Readers who love fairy tales, talking animals and mischief with a moral will enjoy it, as will parents who read aloud and anyone curious about the wooden puppet behind the growing nose.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

A log cries out under a carpenter's tool, and a wooden puppet laughs before he is even finished, then kicks and runs once he has feet. The Adventures of Pinocchio, by Carlo Collodi, is a novel for young readers told in short, lively chapters. The marionette stumbles from one scrape to another, and each scrape carries a lesson about obedience, honesty and work. Collodi speaks to his readers directly, like a cheerful storyteller at the fireside. It all begins in a carpenter's shop, with a piece of wood that will not stay quiet.

A talking log becomes a runaway son

In the shop of old Mastro Cherry, an ordinary block of firewood begs not to be hit so hard and giggles when the plane tickles it. The carpenter falls to the floor, and his nose turns deep purple with fright. His friend Geppetto asks for the wood, because he wants to carve a marionette that can dance, fence and do somersaults.

Geppetto carves it and names it Pinocchio. The puppet is trouble before he is finished. His nose grows however often it is cut, he snatches Geppetto's wig, and as soon as he has legs he kicks his maker and bolts into the street. The crowd decides Geppetto must be cruel, and the poor carpenter is hauled off to prison.

Pinocchio hurries home, where a Talking Cricket warns him that boys who disobey their parents are never happy. Pinocchio throws a hammer at the Cricket. Hunger follows, and he sleeps with his feet on a stove and wakes with them burned off. Geppetto returns, carves new feet, sells his own coat to buy an ABC book and sends the boy to school.

Questions about The Adventures of Pinocchio

What is The Adventures of Pinocchio about?

It is about a wooden marionette carved by the poor woodcarver Geppetto. Pinocchio wants fun instead of school, gets into trouble with swindlers, a showman and a boy-hungry wagon driver, and slowly learns what it means to be good.

Why does Pinocchio's nose grow?

His nose grows each time he lies. The Fairy with Azure Hair explains that lies are easy to spot, because some have short legs and some have long noses, and his are the kind that show on his face.

Who is the Talking Cricket?

He is a wise old insect who has lived in Geppetto's room for over a hundred years. He acts as Pinocchio's conscience, warning him about disobedience, laziness and bad friends, even after Pinocchio throws a hammer at him.

Who are the Fox and the Cat?

They are two swindlers who pretend to be a lame fox and a blind cat. They persuade Pinocchio to bury his gold pieces in a so-called Field of Wonders, so they can steal them.

Is The Adventures of Pinocchio easy to read?

It is written for children in short, lively chapters with plain language and a friendly storyteller. Talking animals, fast adventures and a clear lesson in each episode make it simple to follow and enjoyable to read aloud.
