A Mad Genius Walks Out of Broadmoor

The story opens in Broadmoor, the asylum for the criminally insane, where old John Flack shuffles around the grounds. Other patients whisper that he is the cleverest crook in the world, with nine murders to his name. He fills hundreds of exercise books with plans for crimes. His earlier sixty-three books are his pride, and he says he can find nothing to improve in them.

One day Chief Inspector Simpson of Scotland Yard visits him and warns that these books must never reach the wrong hands. Flack answers with threats. He says he will slip out one night and settle accounts with two men. One is George Ravini, who betrayed him for money. The other is J. G. Reeder, the detective who helped to catch him.

Soon after, an officer from Flack's ward is found with his throat cut, and the ward door stands open. From that moment the danger is real. A man with a gift for planning and a taste for revenge is free in England.

Questions about Le Château de la Terreur

What is Terror Keep about?

It follows the escape of the mad criminal John Flack from Broadmoor and the efforts of the detective J. G. Reeder to stop a huge gold robbery, while Margaret Belman works at a mysterious coastal house.

Who is J. G. Reeder?

A detective at the Public Prosecutor's Office who looks gloomy and old-fashioned, wears side-whiskers and carries an umbrella. He says he has a criminal mind, which helps him think like the men he hunts.

Who is John Flack in Terror Keep?

Flack is a master criminal who plans bank and bullion robberies with great skill. He is sent to Broadmoor as insane, escapes, and returns with a grudge against Reeder.

What does the name Larmes Keep mean?

Larme is the French word for tear, and the house is also called the House of Tears. Olga says the local name comes from the old Baron who built it, and from its dungeons and chains.

Is Terror Keep easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that the dialogue is lively and the plot moves quickly from London to the coast. The humor of Reeder's oddities keeps the tension light.
