Part 91 of 246 · 1 min to read the part
In Thomas Ross, Jr., Thomas recounts how a mother swallow saves her young from a snake, only to be killed by a shrike shortly afterward. He connects her fate to his own: he overcomes his baser nature but is destroyed by his brother’s ambition.
What happens
- Thomas sees a cliff swallow nest in a clay bank near Miller’s Ford.
- After the young hatch, a snake climbs toward the nest to eat them.
- The mother attacks with her wings until the snake falls into Spoon River and drowns.
- Less than an hour afterward, a shrike impales the mother on a thorn.
- Thomas compares this reversal to overcoming his baser nature and then being destroyed by his brother’s ambition.

What to notice
The closing comparison makes the bird’s sudden defeat a parallel to Thomas’s own experience. Personal improvement does not protect him from another person’s ambition.
