The Spanish Main sets the stage
The Spanish Main was the name given to the Caribbean coast of Spanish America and the waters around it. Spain held rich colonies there, and silver and gold moved by ship and mule train toward Europe. That wealth drew rivals. English, French and Dutch captains came to take what they could, sometimes with the quiet blessing of their governments.
The raiders were called buccaneers. The word first described hunters on the island of Hispaniola who smoked meat over wooden frames, and it later came to mean sea raiders based in the Caribbean. Their base for much of the later seventeenth century was Port Royal in Jamaica, an English colony that grew rich and rowdy on plunder and trade.
Brady's novel is set in this world. It gives you hot harbors, crowded ships, fortified towns and the constant risk of capture or death. Knowing this background helps you see why a poor young man might gamble everything on the sea, and why a leader who could win battles might rise very fast.
