De quoi parle ce livre ?
A muffled stranger hides under a train seat, creeps across fields, and slips into a dark garden. The villa belongs to Simon Rattar, the procurator fiscal, a lawyer so silent the whole county calls him Silent Simon. Simon is a Scottish detective novel by J. Storer Clouston, and it opens a puzzle with a murder, no thief, no weapon and no motive. Around it gathers a funny cast: a butler who hunts for clues with a measuring tape, a laird with one glass eye, a young author in a heliotrope tie, and a sporting visitor with a monocle who listens more than he talks. Clouston plays fair with his clues. Begin at the lawyer's strange breakfast table.

A stranger watches the villa
The story opens with a passenger who does everything he can to avoid being seen. He changes carriages, lies flat on the floor as the train nears the station, and leaves by the wrong door. Then he slips into the grounds of a villa.
The next morning the owner, Simon Rattar, behaves oddly himself. He eats breakfast at half past eight every day, but today he stands at the window first, and there is a red cut on his chin. His housemaid, Mary MacLean, reports a man in the drive and footprints under the library window.
Rattar says little and warns her not to gossip. Everyone thinks they know Silent Simon, and that is the point.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

What is Simon by J. Storer Clouston about?
It is a Scottish detective novel about a respected lawyer who starts to behave strangely, the murder of a baronet in his library, and a private detective who sorts out the clues while a false rumour harms two innocent young people.
Who is Mr. Carrington in Simon?
Carrington is a private inquiry agent who arrives in town posing as a sportsman looking to rent shooting or fishing. His easygoing manner and monocle make people trust him, and they tell him what they would tell no one else.
Is Simon a funny book?
Yes, in a quiet way. Clouston gives the butler Bisset his own theories, the young author Malcolm his pleas for sympathy, and Ned Cromarty his blunt American habits, so the mystery comes with a good deal of comedy.
Why is Simon Rattar called Silent Simon?
He says very little, answering with grunts and nods and a steady look. People take this as wisdom and repeat his few remarks as shrewd. The nickname becomes part of the puzzle, because silence can hide a good deal.
Is Simon easy to read today?
The story moves in short chapters with clear scenes and lively dialogue. Each character has a distinct voice, and the clues are placed in plain view, so a reader can follow along and try to solve the case.
