Souvenirs et lettres du général Robert E. Lee in short
The book follows one life in the order the son remembers it. A cheerful father shapes his children, serves at West Point and in Texas, then resigns in April 1861 to follow Virginia. He builds an army, endures a failed first campaign, and commands through hunger, loss and the final retreat.
What Souvenirs et lettres du général Robert E. Lee is about
Picture a small boy in his best blue frock, waiting in the hall at Arlington. His father is coming home from the Mexican War after more than two years away. The father pushes through the crowd, calls for his little boy, and lifts up the wrong child, a playmate named Armistead.
That scene opens Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee, written by his youngest son, Robert E. Lee Jr., who served as a private gunner and later on the cavalry staff. He builds it from his own memories and his father's letters. You get a general who writes about socks, cats, weddings and prayer in the same week that he plans the defense of Richmond.
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?. Readers who love American history told through family letters, who enjoy a close look at a famous life from the people who shared the house, the camp and the road, and who like horses.

The general at home was a playful, devoted father
Robert E. Lee Jr. begins with his earliest clear memory. Lee comes home to Arlington in 1848, and the household gathers in the hall. The father kisses the visiting child Armistead by mistake, and the author remembers feeling humiliated in his best frock. He tells it with a smile.
The family pets fill the next pages. A terrier named Spec follows the children everywhere, even to church. Lee keeps his war mare Grace Darling, who carries the scars of several bullets. The children climb into his bed in the morning to hear his stories, and he declares that without tickling there is no story. Yet he is firm, and the son knows that any order from his father must be obeyed.
Lee sits beside his son at night with a Latin reader, showing each step but never giving the answer. He tells his wife to use mildness rather than harshness. Warmth and discipline live together in his house.
