De quoi parle ce livre ?

Quest for Fire is a short novel of prehistoric life, published in French in 1911 as La Guerre du feu. Its author, J.-H. Rosny aîné, was a Belgian-born French writer who also wrote about early humans in other books. He set out to imagine a world with no writing, no metal and no farms, where the greatest wealth a tribe can own is a flame it cannot yet make.

The story follows a small tribe called the Ulhamr, who carry fire with them in cages and guard it as their life. When the fire dies, the tribe faces cold, darkness and fear of the beasts that roam the night. Three young men are sent to find new fire. You will walk with them across forests, marshes and plains, past mammoths and lions, and among rival peoples who differ from them in body and in habits. The book gives you adventure, a feel for a lost world, and a question that stays with you: what would you do to bring home the one thing your people cannot live without? Let us begin with the loss itself.

Point clé 1 sur 6

A tribe loses the flame it carries

The story opens with the Ulhamr on the move, a tribe of men, women and children who live by hunting and gathering and who depend on fire for warmth, for safety and for cooked food. They do not know how to make fire. They can only keep it alive, feeding it and carrying it in cages from camp to camp. To them it is a living thing, almost a creature that must be tended.

Then the fire is lost. The tribe suffers a disaster on the road, and the flame that they have kept through so many seasons dies. Rosny does not treat this as a small misfortune. The tribe sinks into dread, because without fire the night belongs to the lions, the bears and the cold.

The tribe is not a crowd of equals. It has a chief, hunters, and people whose strength decides their rank. Each person has a place, and the loss of fire shakes every one of those places. The young are anxious and the old are grim.

It is clear that someone must go out and find fire among other peoples, since the Ulhamr cannot make it. The question is who will have the strength and the nerve to go. That choice sends the story onto the road.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
