Résumé de Prince Otto
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers who love Stevenson's voice, small-court comedy, and stories where character matters more than action, with a royal marriage and questions of kindness and power at their heart.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Prince Otto is a short novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in book form in 1885. It came after the success of his sea adventure Treasure Island, yet it is a very different thing. There are no pirates and no chases. The setting is Grunewald, a tiny invented German state, where a good-natured prince sits on a throne that is slowly coming apart.
Stevenson wrote it as a romance in a light, playful, almost theatrical style. A narrator speaks to the reader, smiles at the characters, and sometimes steps in to comment. Under the charm there are serious questions. What is a ruler for? Can a kind man be a good one? And can a marriage that has gone cold find its warmth again? In this summary you will meet the prince, his wife, and the minister who has taken the real power. You will see how the story is built and what it is really about. Let us begin with the prince himself and the little country he does not quite rule.

A small state with an idle prince
The story opens in Grunewald, one of the many small German principalities of the age. It has a palace, a court, a little army and a prince, but not much else that would make a great power. Everything about it is on a miniature scale. Stevenson uses this size to gain a gentle comedy, since the grand rituals of kingship are performed by people who can hardly believe in them.
Prince Otto is the center of that world. He is friendly, easygoing and fond of ease. He likes books, walking and company, and he dislikes the tedious work of government. Nobody could call him cruel. His people mostly like him, and that is part of the trouble, because being liked has become a replacement for being useful.
Stevenson takes care to make Otto sympathetic. He is not a fool, and he is not a villain. He sees how things stand, but he drifts, and he lets others carry the burden he should carry. The narrator teases him and loves him in the same breath, and the reader is invited to do both.
This opening sets the question that drives the whole book. A state needs someone to decide things. If the prince will not, who will? The answer lies in the palace corridors, and it is not a comfortable one for Otto. Before we meet the person who has stepped into the gap, we need to look at the other half of the ruling pair, the Princess.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Prince Otto
What is Prince Otto about?
It is a romance set in the small invented German state of Grunewald. It follows an amiable but idle prince, his strong-willed wife and a powerful minister, as political trouble and a failing marriage press on the throne.
Is Prince Otto a true story?
No. Grunewald and its court are invented. Stevenson modeled the setting on the many small German states of his day, and published the novel in 1885, after Treasure Island.
Is Prince Otto like Treasure Island?
Not much. It has no pirates or sea adventure. It is a witty, ornate court romance with a talkative narrator, and it cares more about character, marriage and rule than about action.
Who is Baron von Gondremark?
He is the prime minister of Grunewald, an able and ambitious man who runs the state while Prince Otto neglects it. He is also close to the Princess, which adds to the court's tension.
Is Prince Otto hard to read?
No. It is a short novel with a simple, clear story: an idle prince, a cold marriage, and a minister who really rules. A lively narrator smiles along with you and guides you through the little state of Grunewald.
