Prester John is an adventure novel by John Buchan, written in the early twentieth century. David, a minister's son, tells it himself. At nineteen he runs a trading store in the far north of the Transvaal, a place full of talk about a holy mountain, smuggled diamonds and a lost African king.

Three boys follow tracks on the Kirkcaple shore

The story opens in Kirkcaple, a North Sea town where David Crawfurd's father is the parish minister. David is twelve and belongs to a gang of boys who take the names of pirates. His friends are Archie Leslie, a keen tracker, and Tam Dyke, who loves to boast.

On a Communion Sunday in April, the three slip out of church. That night Archie finds a fresh track of a big man heading for the shore. The boys put out their lantern and creep down toward their cave.

On the sands they see a small fire and a barefoot man walking circles around it. It is the African preacher Tam described, and the boys are sure they are watching black magic.

Tam shouts a taunt, and the man leaps after them. He hits the pursuer in the face with a stone and escapes. The next morning he spots the preacher driving to the station with a swollen eye.

One rash night can mark a whole life.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Le Prêtre Jean

What is Prester John by John Buchan about?

It follows David Crawfurd, a young Scot who takes a storekeeper's job in the northern Transvaal. He uncovers a plot by a charismatic African preacher to lead a rising and pursues a sacred necklace, in a story of chase, secrecy and courage.

Who was the real Prester John?

Prester John was a legendary Christian king whom medieval Europeans hoped to find in Asia or Africa. In the novel, Captain Arcoll explains that African leaders came to see him as an ancestor, and a rebel leader uses his name.

What is the Great Snake or Prester John's necklace in the book?

It is a sacred collar of fifty-five large rubies, said to come down from the old king through generations of rulers. The rebel chiefs treat it as a pledge of leadership, and several characters want it for different reasons.

Is Prester John a true story and when was it written?

No, it is fiction, written in the early twentieth century and set in an invented corner of the Transvaal. Real details, such as the Berg mountains, diamonds, and the legend of the old Christian king, give it a base.

Is Prester John easy to read today?

Yes, in the sense that it has short chapters, a lively first-person voice and a clear sequence of adventures. Readers should expect the attitudes of its time, and the plain style makes the action easy to follow.
