Pollyanna, Chapter 15 summary

Chapter 15 of 32 · 11 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 15, Pollyanna Whittier visits John Pendleton with jelly, cheers him briefly, and unsettles him by revealing that she lives with Miss Polly Harrington. Dr. Chilton gains fresh joy from her view of his work, while her literal obedience to her aunt’s instructions about the gift causes distress.

What happens

  1. Dr. Chilton overrides John Pendleton’s ban on visitors and admits Pollyanna, describing her cheerfulness to the nurse as a powerful tonic.
  2. Pollyanna makes Pendleton laugh and urges him to appreciate his unbroken leg and the people caring for him.
  3. Pendleton grows pale when he learns whose niece Pollyanna is, then turns away when she says her aunt does not send the jelly.
  4. During their ride, Pollyanna tells Dr. Chilton that helping sufferers makes his work happy, giving him a new sense of joy.
  5. Nancy offers a different reason for a doctor’s gladness, but Pollyanna dislikes its emphasis on being healthier than others.
  6. Miss Polly is distressed that Pollyanna explicitly tells Pendleton she does not send the gift, leaving the girl confused.
