Quixotic

Quixotic means guided by generous ideals but out of touch with what is practical or possible; it comes from the story of Don Quixote in Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote. The word can suggest affection for someone's courage as well as doubt about their judgment.

Where it comes from

The knight behind the word

Don Quixote sets out to live like a knight from his favourite tales. His wish to do brave deeds repeatedly clashes with the ordinary world.

In Don Quixote, he mistakes windmills for giants and charges at them, despite Sancho Panza's warning.

Good intentions, poor judgment

Today, a quixotic plan is usually well meant but unlikely to work. The word points to the gap between a noble aim and a realistic understanding of events.

In Don Quixote, he forces a farmer to promise to stop beating a young servant, then rides away satisfied. Once he has gone, the farmer beats the boy again.

How to use Quixotic

  1. Use it for an idealistic person, plan, or attempt.
  2. Show what makes the aim impractical.
  3. Make clear whether the tone is admiring, critical, or both.

Is quixotic a compliment or an insult?

Quixotic can be either, and often carries a little of both. It can praise someone's generous aims or courage while suggesting that the plan ignores real obstacles. Used harshly, it can make a sincere effort sound foolish.

Does quixotic mean the same as tilting at windmills?

They overlap, but quixotic is broader. Tilting at windmills means fighting imagined enemies or problems, while quixotic can describe any grand, idealistic effort that is impractical. Both expressions come from Don Quixote, whose hero often mistakes the world around him for a knightly adventure.
