A radio man quits and finds a mystery
Peter Moore resigns from the Marconi service in San Francisco. His hearing is so sharp that he reads signals other men hear only as scratching. He says he has had too much China.
But in Chinatown he has been carrying sealed messages between a Shanghai silk man and his brother Lo Ong. Two notes are thrown to him from a window. One warns him away and the other is a scrap of red paper with the word Vandalia on it.
A smear on the paper names a city called Len Yang. That is enough. Peter rejoins the Vandalia and sails for China, because a small strange detail pulls him in and his curiosity will not let go.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
