Chapter 15 of 24 · 12 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 15, Anne arrives at Camden Place and hears that Mr. Elliot has restored friendly relations with her father and sister, though she questions his motives. When he visits that evening, she recognizes the man from Lyme and finds his conversation and concern unexpectedly pleasing.

What happens

  1. Anne receives a warmer welcome than she expects, but Sir Walter and Elizabeth chiefly want to describe their happy life in Bath.
  2. They praise Mr. Elliot, explain his reconciliation with them, and repeat Colonel Wallis’s defense of his marriage.
  3. Anne suspects that Mr. Elliot seeks Elizabeth’s hand, while Mrs. Clay appears to encourage Elizabeth’s hopes.
  4. Sir Walter dwells on physical beauty, criticizes Bath’s inhabitants, and receives flattery from Elizabeth and Mrs. Clay.
  5. Mr. Elliot arrives at ten, recognizes Anne with pleasure, and discusses their missed acquaintance at Lyme.
  6. His thoughtful questions about the accident impress Anne, and his hour-long visit makes her first evening unexpectedly pleasant.
