De quoi parle ce livre ?
Pearl-Maiden is a historical romance by H. Rider Haggard, published in 1903. Haggard is best known for adventure tales such as King Solomon's Mines and She. Here he turns to the ancient world. The story is set in Judea in the first century, as the Roman armies close in on Jerusalem and the city moves toward its fall in the year 70.
At its centre stands a young woman called Miriam, whom the title names the Pearl-Maiden, and a Roman named Marcus, whose path crosses hers. You get a tale of war, danger and loyalty, set against real events. It shows what faith can cost in a city under siege, and what love must risk when it crosses a hard divide. First, the world the story enters.

A city on the edge of ruin
The story opens in a world that is already breaking apart. Judea is under Roman rule, and anger against that rule is rising. Haggard draws on the history of the great revolt, which led to the Roman siege of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple in the year 70.
This setting is not a mere backdrop. Jerusalem in those years was crowded, hungry and divided, with rival groups inside the walls fighting one another as well as the enemy outside. Haggard uses that tension to give his plot its pressure. Every choice his characters make has to be made while danger gathers.
For the reader, this means the personal story is always tied to the larger one. A private loyalty can become a public risk. A quiet act of kindness can bring a deadly price. The reader senses from the start that few people in this city will come through untouched, and that is what gives the adventure its weight.
Haggard also makes the ancient world feel close and physical. He writes of walls, gates, courts and desert roads, so that the places are as real to the listener as the people who move through them.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.
