Who Satan is
Satan first appears in Hell, where the rebel angels lie stunned after losing their war in Heaven. He rises before his followers, speaks to his closest companion Beelzebub, and refuses to submit.
His courage and powerful speeches can make him seem dignified even in defeat. Yet he calls his prison a kingdom, revealing how pride shapes his understanding of freedom.
What Satan wants
Satan wants to strike at God by attacking the new world and the creatures who live there. When the council accepts this plan, he volunteers to make the dangerous journey alone. His decision shows both his willingness to lead and his own ambition.
How Satan changes
Near Eden, Satan admits that his rebellion is his own doing and comes close to repentance. He rejects that possibility, hardens his heart, and turns his attention toward Adam and Eve.
Watching their love, he feels envy and something like pity, but still chooses to work against them. The commanding rebel becomes a hidden spy, using animal shapes and whispering at Eve's ear.
