Paradise Lost, Book 11 summary

Book 11 of 12 · 31 min to read the book

In Book 11, God accepts Adam and Eve’s repentance but orders their removal from Paradise, and Michael arrives to explain the sentence and comfort them. Before their departure, he shows Adam visions of human suffering and corruption, ending with survivors of a flood and God’s covenant against another such destruction.

What happens

  1. The Son presents the pair’s prayers, and the Father accepts their repentance while ordering Michael to remove them from Paradise.
  2. Michael announces exile, hears their grief, and assures Adam that God’s presence extends beyond the garden.
  3. Leaving Eve asleep, Michael prepares Adam’s sight and shows him a brother’s murder, widespread sickness, and the decline of age.
  4. Adam admires marriages that Michael exposes as corrupt; their offspring practice warfare and reject a righteous man whom Heaven rescues.
  5. An elder’s warnings fail, and he builds an ark that preserves his household and animals while a flood overwhelms the world.
  6. Adam rejoices when the waters retreat, and Michael explains the rainbow as God’s pledge against another worldwide flood.
