Book 3: A Long Lane, Chapter 7 of 68 · 19 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 7, Silas Wegg reveals a newer will that leaves most of John Harmon’s property to the Crown, giving the partners grounds to threaten Mr. Boffin. Venus takes possession of the document, while Wegg proposes demanding half Boffin’s possessions and watches the removal of the little mound.

What happens

  1. After their scuffle, Wegg tells Venus that he finds a cashbox inside the pump and opens it without consulting him.
  2. Wegg reports that its will gives Boffin only the Little Mound and dates after the proved will.
  3. At Venus’s shop, Venus checks the document and uses threats about his anatomical work to secure custody.
  4. The partners agree to delay their demand while the mounds are cleared, unless Boffin removes anything under their watch.
  5. Venus describes his disappointment over Pleasant Riderhood, and Wegg regrets bringing him into partnership.
  6. Wegg gloats outside Boffin’s house, dismisses the possibility of his honesty, and watches workers remove the little mound next day.
