This book suits readers who love Tang and Song poetry, enjoy literary gossip and detective work, and like a critic who takes sides. It rewards anyone curious about how poets lived and why some lines travel for centuries.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What would make a critic say that one poet writes like an immortal and another climbs like a mountain? Oubei Poetry Talks opens with just that boldness. Li Bai, it says, drifts through a poem like a heavenly horse, while Du Fu works so hard that the effort shows.
Its author is Zhao Yi, who took the pen name Oubei and died in 1814. He was a Qing historian who checked dates, titles, and sources as a habit. In twelve volumes he gathers notes on poets from the Tang to his own age. You learn why Li Bai cannot be copied, how poets lived, and how to read a poem without forcing a story onto it.

Li Bai writes like an immortal, without visible effort
The book opens with Li Bai, and its first claim is bold. Zhao Yi says Li Bai seems born of the realm of immortals. His verse comes like a heavenly horse crossing the sky, and no one can rein it in.
Du Fu and Han Yu also write shocking images of thunder and falling bones, but the reader sees them straining. Li Bai has a god stroke the head of the first being and one wind topple a mountain. These images are as odd as any, yet they come with ease. Whatever he touches blooms into spring.
Zhao Yi also reads Li Bai's ambition. In the first of his old-style poems, Li Bai means to join the Book of Songs directly and revive poetry. The critic insists this is sincere purpose, not boasting. He also notes that Li Bai wished for fame and for immortality, and Zhao Yi calls this double wish simply his nature. Li Bai shows what poetry looks like when the effort leaves no trace.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
