Oliver Twist, Chapter 22 summary

In Chapter 22, Sikes and Toby Crackit force Oliver into a house near Chertsey to open its front door, despite his desperate refusal to steal. Oliver resolves to warn the household instead, but men appear on the stairs, he is shot, and Sikes carries him away as he loses consciousness.

What happens

  1. Sikes brings Oliver to Toby Crackit and Barney, where the men force him to drink liquor before resting.
  2. At half past one, the robbers prepare their weapons and tools, then lead Oliver through Chertsey.
  3. Inside the grounds of a house, Oliver realizes their purpose and begs to escape, but both robbers threaten him.
  4. Sikes forces a small window and puts Oliver inside with orders to unlock the front door.
  5. Oliver decides to warn the household, but two men appear, gunfire erupts, and he is wounded.
  6. Sikes fires back, pulls Oliver through the window, and carries him away until Oliver loses consciousness.
