À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers who love quiet, character-driven fiction, rural settings, and strong women at the center of the story. It also welcomes anyone curious about immigrant history, family loyalty, and life on the Nebraska prairie.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

O Pioneers! is a novel by Willa Cather, published in 1913. It tells how a young Swedish immigrant woman, Alexandra Bergson, builds a prosperous farm on the bare high plains of Nebraska. Cather had grown up in Nebraska among Swedish, Bohemian and French settlers, and she wrote this book out of what she had seen and heard there. It was the first of her prairie novels, and it gave her a voice she had not found in her earlier work.

The book follows Alexandra, her family and her neighbors across about two decades. It asks what it costs to tame a hard country and who gets to share in the harvest. It is a story of farming and money, but it is also a story of loyalty, of grief and of love that does not always find a way out. Cather writes in plain sentences, and the land itself almost counts as a character.

What do you get from it? A clear picture of immigrant life on the Divide, the high flat country between two rivers. You also get a heroine who thinks long and acts firmly, and a plot that moves from a dying father's last request to the strains of a changed family. Let us begin where the novel begins, in a small town in a cold, windy land, with a family that is close to giving up.

A struggling family on a hard land

The story opens in Hanover, a small and ragged town on the Nebraska Divide. A child stands in the wind and the cold, a kitten is stranded on a telegraph pole, and the town seems barely attached to the earth. The Bergsons are a Swedish family who have taken up land here, and the land has not been kind to them. The winters are fierce and the soil seems stubborn, and many of their neighbors are already thinking of leaving.

John Bergson, the father, is a worn and sickly man. He has worked hard and borrowed money, and he knows he is dying. He has four children. Alexandra is the eldest and the steadiest. Lou and Oscar are the middle sons, and little Emil is the baby, whom Alexandra loves with something close to a mother's love.

In his last days John Bergson does something that matters for the whole book. He does not hand the farm to his sons. He sees that Alexandra has the clearest head in the house, so he asks the family to listen to her and to let her guide the work. It is an unusual choice for a farming family of that time, and the brothers do not forget it.

We also meet Carl Linstrum, a boy a good deal older than Emil and closer to Alexandra in age, whose family are neighbors. Carl is gentle and thoughtful, and he is not made for rough farm work. He and Alexandra become close friends, and he is one of the few people who understands her. The two share a habit of looking at the land and thinking about what it might become.

So the first movement of the novel sets out a plain question. Can this family hold on, when the land seems set against them? Cather answers slowly, by showing what the Bergsons do in the years after their father is buried. Alexandra will have to prove that the old man's trust was well placed.
