Theseus and the Minotaur
Theseus and the Minotaur is a Greek myth about a hero who kills a creature with a human body and a bull’s head inside a maze. Ariadne helps Theseus escape, making the story a lasting example of courage that depends on another person’s help.
Key stories of Theseus and the Minotaur
The journey to Crete
Athens must send young people to Crete, where the Minotaur devours them in the Labyrinth, a maze built by Daedalus. Theseus joins the group to try to end the killing.
In Plutarch’s Parallel Lives, Theseus volunteers to sail with the young Athenians rather than leave their fate to chance.

Ariadne’s thread
In the most common version, Ariadne, daughter of King Minos, gives Theseus a thread to mark his route through the maze. He kills the Minotaur and follows the thread back out.
In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Theseus finds his way back through the confusing passages by gathering up the thread he has laid behind him.

The forgotten sail
Theseus has promised his father, Aegeus, to display a white sail if he returns alive. He forgets, and Aegeus sees the dark sail, believes his son is dead, and throws himself into the sea.
In Plutarch’s Parallel Lives, the returning ship’s unchanged sail turns Theseus’s victory into a family disaster.

Why does Ariadne help Theseus?
Ariadne helps Theseus because she falls in love with him. In the most common version, she gives him the thread that allows him to escape the Labyrinth. Her help is essential: defeating the Minotaur would not by itself show him the way out.
What happens to Ariadne after the escape?
In the most common version, Theseus leaves Ariadne on the island of Naxos, and Dionysus later becomes her husband. Accounts differ about why Theseus leaves her. Ovid’s Metamorphoses moves from her abandonment to her rescue by the god, who honours her with a constellation.
