Freya

Freya is a Norse goddess associated with love, fertility, magic, and the dead. She matters because her stories connect desire and loss with divine power: she refuses an unwanted marriage, searches for her absent husband, and receives a share of those killed in battle.

Key stories of Freya

The unwanted wedding

The giant Thrym demands Freya as his bride in exchange for returning Thor’s stolen hammer. Freya angrily refuses, so Thor dresses as the bride and Loki accompanies him disguised as a maid.

In The Poetic Edda, the poem Thrymskvitha describes Freya’s furious refusal: the gods’ hall shakes and her necklace springs off. Thor then wears bridal clothing to deceive Thrym and recover his hammer.

The search for her husband

Freya’s husband, Odr, travels far away, leaving her grieving. She searches for him among unfamiliar peoples and weeps tears of red gold.

In The Prose Edda, Snorri Sturluson explains Freya’s many names through her travels in search of Odr. Her golden tears also help explain poetic ways of describing gold.

How to recognise Freya in stories

  1. Look for her precious necklace, Brisingamen, or her chariot drawn by cats.
  2. Notice her falcon-feather garment and her connection with magic.
  3. Watch for a goddess linked both to love and to warriors killed in battle.

Are Freya and Frigg the same goddess?

Freya and Frigg are usually treated as different goddesses in the surviving Norse stories. Frigg is Odin’s wife, while Freya’s husband is Odr. Their names and some of their associations overlap, so readers sometimes confuse them.

Does Freya receive dead warriors like Odin?

Yes, Freya receives a share of the warriors killed in battle. In The Poetic Edda, she chooses half of the slain for her realm, Folkvang, while Odin receives the other half. This makes her more than a goddess of love.
