In Chapter 68, Raffles returns at Christmas and frightens Bulstrode into preparing to leave Middlemarch, although the banker delays making his departure final. These preparations give Caleb Garth an opening to arrange a conditional tenancy at Stone Court for Fred Vincy, offering Fred work, training, and a possible income.

What happens

  1. Raffles arrives on Christmas Eve, insists on staying, and makes Bulstrode fear that his family might hear damaging secrets.
  2. Bulstrode threatens to stop supporting Raffles if he returns or exposes him, then drives him away and gives him a hundred pounds.
  3. Still expecting disgrace, Bulstrode prepares to leave Middlemarch and reduce his business responsibilities, but keeps his arrangements reversible.
  4. Caleb Garth proposes that Fred Vincy rent Stone Court under his management, gaining practical training and a modest income.
  5. Bulstrode agrees to the proposal if he leaves, and Caleb secretly inspects the farm while Mrs. Garth urges caution.
