Mansfield Park, Chapter 45 summary

Chapter 45 of 48 · 12 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 45, Fanny longs to return to Mansfield while Edmund reports continuing fears for Tom, and Mary’s letter exposes her interest in Edmund inheriting wealth and status. Although the Crawfords offer to take her back, Fanny refuses without her uncle’s permission and condemns Mary’s priorities.

What happens

  1. Edmund explains that Tom remains seriously weak and may have lung trouble, despite Lady Bertram’s confidence in his recovery.
  2. Easter passes without arrangements for Fanny’s return, and she increasingly thinks of Mansfield rather than Portsmouth as home.
  3. Fanny misses spring in the country and imagines helping her distressed relatives, while questioning why Tom’s sisters remain away.
  4. Mary requests accurate news of Tom and openly welcomes the advantages Edmund could gain through his brother’s death.
  5. Mary reports Henry’s contact with Mrs. Rushworth and offers, with him, to bring Fanny back to Mansfield.
  6. Fanny refuses because Sir Thomas has not summoned her, and sees money as the basis of Mary’s changed attitude toward Edmund.
