Mansfield Park, Chapter 22 summary

Chapter 22 of 48 · 16 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 22, Fanny gains attention after her cousins leave, and sheltering from rain begins regular visits to Mary Crawford, whose company leaves her uneasy. Edmund welcomes their growing acquaintance, but his exchanges with Mary pain Fanny; an invitation to dine at the Parsonage gives her an unfamiliar social opportunity.

What happens

  1. With her cousins away, Fanny receives more attention at home and becomes a welcome visitor at the Parsonage.
  2. Dr. Grant brings Fanny inside during rain, and Mary provides dry clothes before playing the harp for her.
  3. Regular visits follow, although Fanny feels little affection for Mary and dislikes some of her jokes.
  4. During a shrubbery walk, Fanny praises nature and memory, while Mary imagines a comfortable, socially important country life.
  5. Edmund and Mrs. Grant join them, and Mary's argument with Edmund about wealth and distinction makes Fanny uncomfortable.
  6. The Grants invite Fanny and Edmund to dinner, and Edmund encourages her acceptance before accompanying her home.
