In Chapter 13, John Yates inspires Tom Bertram and his companions to arrange private theatricals at Mansfield, despite Edmund’s objections about their father’s absence, Maria’s engagement, and changes to the house. 4. Edmund challenges the plan’s propriety, expense, and use of their absent father’s house, but Tom rejects his objections.
  5. Fanny sympathizes with Edmund, whose attempt to persuade his sisters the next morning also fails.
  6. Mary Crawford offers to participate, and Mrs. Norris welcomes a scheme that gives her activity and importance without personal expense.
