Point clé 1 sur 9

A graduation, a bell, and a pearl

Madge knows that her dearest friend Phyllis Alden earned the same marks as she did. Phil says that Madge simply speaks better.

Before the ceremony a boy brings Madge a box covered in tiny shells. Inside lies one lovely loose pearl, with no card and no name. Madge hides it under her pillow.

On the stage she is struck by fright, then finds her voice. As she finishes, a hoarse voice calls her name from the back, and she leans forward. The great arch of flowers crashes down right behind her, and Phil takes a blow from its bell. Nobody can say who shouted the warning.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about La victoire de Madge Morton

What is Madge Morton's Victory about?

It follows Madge Morton and her houseboat friends through a summer at Cape May. She rescues a street child named Tania, befriends a pearl diver, dives to the bay floor and finds an old treasure chest, while a schemer plots against her.

Who is Captain Jules Fontaine?

He is a huge, weathered retired pearl diver who lives in a cottage called The Anchorage with a monkey named Madge. He takes the girls under his wing, teaches Madge to dive, and seems oddly interested in her family.

Do I need to read the earlier houseboat books first?

No. The early chapters recap the earlier adventures of the Merry Maid, so new readers can follow easily. The story, characters and summer holiday setting are introduced clearly, and the plot stands on its own.

Who is Tania and why does she say she is a princess?

Tania is a thin girl of about twelve who dances on New York streets. Her mother taught her to pretend, so she imagines herself an enchanted fairy princess living under a spell. Madge brings her to Cape May.

Is Madge Morton's Victory a true story?

It uses real places, such as Cape May, Delaware Bay and New York, and a real history of pirates on the bay, but its people and plot are invented.
