À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

You will love this book if you enjoy real family stories, journals and letters, or if Little Women made you curious about its author.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What does a girl do when her family has no money, her father lives on ideals, and her own temper keeps getting in the way? Louisa May Alcott answers with a pen. In this book you meet her in a cold attic room, in a war hospital, and at her mother's bedside.

The book gathers her journals, family letters, poems, and a connecting account by a friend of the family. It runs from her birth in Germantown on November 29, 1832, to her death in Boston in 1888. Louisa annotated many entries years later, so you hear the girl and the older woman who smiles at her. You see where the March sisters come from, and the cost of the fame they brought.

Two idealistic parents shape a watchful daughter

Louisa is the second daughter of Amos Bronson Alcott and Abba May Alcott, born on her father's thirty-third birthday. Her father is a teacher with large plans for education and very little income. Her mother comes from the well-known May family of Boston. She is warm, quick to anger, and always generous.

When his Boston school fails, Bronson teaches his children at home. He draws small pictures for their lessons. One picture from 1840 shows a child playing a harp for gentle love and another drawing a bow for anger. It names the struggle Louisa will fight all her life.

Every child must keep a journal, and both parents may read it. Mrs. Alcott answers with short notes that point out a fault and then offer help. Louisa saves them for decades.

Her habit of honest self-examination starts at her parents' table.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
