À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers who love early Christianity, Gnostic thought and ancient religion, and anyone curious about the Nag Hammadi finds, the unknowable God and the awakening of the soul.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What if the risen Jesus appeared on a mountain and answered the biggest questions of all? The Sophia of Jesus Christ is a reconstructed dialogue in the Gnostic tradition that does just that. No author is known. It survives in Coptic, in the Nag Hammadi library found in Egypt in 1945 and in a papyrus book now in Berlin. You will hear of an unknowable God, heavenly beings of light, the fall of Sophia, and an awakening.

The risen Jesus teaches on a mountain

After the resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples on a mountain in Galilee. He comes in a great and invisible light, and they are struck with wonder.

Twelve men and seven women gather. Philip, Matthew, Thomas, Bartholomew and Mariamme ask how the universe came to be and why the world was made.

The Savior answers that human reasoning alone stays a guess. He has come from the Immortal One, so he can speak of what lies beyond sight. Real knowledge is given by someone who comes from the source.

Questions about The Sophia of Jesus Christ

What is the Sophia of Jesus Christ about?

It is a teaching by the risen Jesus to his disciples on a mountain. He explains the unknowable God, the heavenly beings that come from God, the fall of Sophia, and how knowledge can awaken the soul.

Where was the Sophia of Jesus Christ found?

A Coptic copy was found in 1945 among the Nag Hammadi books in Egypt, in Codex III. Another Coptic copy is in a papyrus book in Berlin, and a few Greek fragments also survive.

How is it related to Eugnostos the Blessed?

Eugnostos is an older letter that does not mention Jesus. The Sophia of Jesus Christ reuses much of its teaching and places it in the mouth of the risen Savior, adding questions from the disciples.

Who is Sophia in this text?

Sophia means Wisdom in Greek. The text speaks of a higher Sophia, partner of the Immortal Man, and a lower Sophia, whose act of bringing forth a being alone leads to the making of a flawed world.

Why is it not in the Bible?

It was not among the writings accepted as authoritative by most Christian communities when the biblical canon formed, and church writers criticized Gnostic teachings. It was little known until the Nag Hammadi find in 1945.
