À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers curious about the traditions of Mary's parents and childhood, and for anyone drawn to early Christianity, religious art and devotional storytelling.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What if the most loved stories about Mary were never in the Bible? The Infancy Gospel of James is an anonymous Greek tale from the second century. It names James, the brother of Jesus, as its author, but scholars doubt he wrote it. Matthew and Luke say little about Mary before the angel comes, and this text fills the gap. It gives her parents, her childhood in the Temple and the birth of Jesus in a cave. Many names known from art and feasts first appear here.

A shamed couple and a birth foretold

Joachim, a wealthy man, brings double gifts to the Temple. A man named Reuben stops him because he has left no child in Israel. Hurt and ashamed, Joachim goes into the wilderness and fasts for forty days and forty nights.

His wife Anna mourns her childlessness and her vanished husband. In her garden she sees a nest of sparrows and cries out that even the birds have young. An angel tells her that the Lord has heard her, and she vows to give the child to God.

The pattern echoes Hannah and Sarah. A faithful woman cannot bear a child, God hears her, and the child is given for a purpose. The reader sees at once that this daughter will be special.

Questions about The Infancy Gospel of James

What is the Infancy Gospel of James about?

It tells the story of Mary's parents Joachim and Anna, her birth, her childhood in the Temple, her marriage to Joseph and the birth of Jesus. It adds many details the New Testament does not give.

Why is the Protevangelium not in the Bible?

Church leaders judged it a later work, written long after the events and falsely linked to James. It never entered the New Testament canon, though many Christians still valued its stories and used them in feasts and art.

Who wrote the Protevangelium of James and when?

The author is unknown. The text claims James as its writer, but scholars place it in the second century, around the middle or later part of the 100s.

Is the Infancy Gospel of James a true story?

Historians treat it as devotional storytelling, not eyewitness history. It draws on Matthew, Luke and the Old Testament and adds legends. Its details about Mary's parents and childhood cannot be checked against earlier sources.

Where do the names Joachim and Anna come from?

Joachim and Anna, the parents of Mary, are not named in the New Testament. They first appear in this text. Later Christian tradition adopted them, and churches still keep their feast days.
