Readers who love the stories behind the stories will enjoy this: birth tales, angels, Temple life and the family background of Mary. It suits anyone curious about early Christian legend and sacred art.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What if the most important birth in a story were the birth of the mother? The Gospel of the Nativity of Mary asks you to look there. It begins with a childless couple, Joachim and Anna, who give away two thirds of what they own, yet Joachim hears a priest tell him God has judged him unworthy. Then an angel steps into their sorrow.
The four Gospels say almost nothing about where Mary came from. This small Latin work by an unknown writer is one answer early readers wrote down. It was passed down under the name of Jerome, though scholars doubt he wrote it, and it reshapes an older Greek text, the Protoevangelium of James.

A righteous couple waits for a child
The story opens by naming Mary's parents. Joachim comes from Galilee and the town of Nazareth, while Anna comes from a family in Bethlehem. Mary herself is said to descend from the royal house of David.
Joachim and Anna are upright before God and blameless before their neighbors. They live together for about twenty years in a faithful marriage. Yet they have no children. In their world, children were the visible sign of blessing, so a childless home could look like a home under judgment, even when nothing in its conduct deserves it.
They divide all their possessions into three parts. One part goes to the Temple and its servants. One goes to strangers and the poor. One is kept for their own household.
They also carry a vow. If the Lord ever grants them a child, they will dedicate that child to his service. So they go up to the Temple at every feast of the year. Sarah, Rachel, and the mothers of Samson and Samuel all wait years for a child, and by placing Anna in that line, the text signals that her daughter will be a child of promise.
Faithful living in the middle of unanswered longing is where this story begins.

Questions about The Gospel of the Nativity of Mary
What is the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary about?
It tells of Mary's birth to Joachim and Anna after years of childlessness, her childhood in the Temple at Jerusalem, her vow of virginity, the choice of Joseph by a dove on his rod, and the angel Gabriel's message.
Who wrote the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary and when?
The author is unknown. The Latin text circulated under the name of Jerome, but scholars doubt he wrote it. Most place it in the early Middle Ages, drawing on the second-century Protoevangelium of James.
Is the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary in the Bible?
No. It is part of the New Testament apocrypha, texts that the churches did not include in the canon. Even so, its stories about Joachim, Anna and Mary's childhood shaped feast days, art and devotion.
How is it related to the Protoevangelium of James?
It retells much of the same story, the birth of Mary, her Temple years and the choice of Joseph, in a shorter Latin form. Scholars debate whether it is an adaptation or draws on shared sources.
Why does the story matter to Christian tradition?
It gave names to Mary's parents, Joachim and Anna, and images such as the child climbing the Temple steps. Those details entered feast days, sermons and paintings, and many believers still know them.
