A Coptic text from the Nag Hammadi find
This is a Gnostic text, which means it teaches salvation through direct knowledge of the divine. It survives in Coptic, the language of late ancient Egypt, in two copies among the manuscripts found near Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt in 1945. Scholars think it was first composed in Greek and place it in the early centuries of the Common Era, though they debate the details.
It is not the Greek fragment with a similar name, and it does not tell the life of Jesus. It is a visionary and liturgical work, closer to a hymn of the cosmos than to a story. It belongs to the Sethian Gnostics, who honoured Seth, the third son of Adam and Eve.
Church writers such as Irenaeus of Lyon argued against Gnostic teachings, and that is the main reason such books stand outside most Bibles and were long lost. The Nag Hammadi find lets readers hear the tradition in its own words.

What is the Gospel of the Egyptians about?
It is a Sethian Gnostic hymn that describes how the divine world of light comes from silence, how a lower creator shapes the material world, and how Seth sows a holy seed and brings baptism.
Is this the same as the Greek Gospel of the Egyptians?
No. This is a Coptic text found at Nag Hammadi, also called the Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit. A separate Greek fragment with a similar name is a different work.
Who is Seth in this text?
Seth is the third son of Adam and Eve in the Hebrew Bible. For the Sethians he is a heavenly revealer who plants and guards the holy seed, the race of those who know the light.
Who was Sakla?
Sakla is the angel who, with the demon Nebruel, brings forth twelve angels to rule the lower worlds. He boasts that he is a jealous god, which marks him as the ignorant creator.
Why are there so many strange names and vowel cries?
Names of aeons, lights and attendants build a map of the divine world, and the vowel cries stand for the unspeakable name. Read aloud, they work like the music of a hymn.
