À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers who love early Christian legend, students of how the Gospel stories grew, and anyone curious about Jesus in Eastern Christian tradition.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

The Arabic Infancy Gospel is an anonymous account of the birth and childhood of Jesus. It survives in Arabic manuscripts, and scholars link it to earlier Syriac Christian writing. Nobody knows who wrote it. Its date is also debated. Many scholars place the underlying material in the early centuries of Christianity and the Arabic form somewhat later, and they do not agree on exact dates.

The book fills a gap that many Christians felt in the four Gospels, which say little about Jesus between his birth and his adult ministry. Here Jesus is a child who speaks from the cradle, heals the sick and meets kings, robbers and teachers. In this summary you will hear how the text is built, what it borrows from older stories, what its main episodes tell, and why it stands outside most Bibles. We begin with where the text came from and in what forms it survives.

A text that survives in Arabic

The Arabic Infancy Gospel takes its name from the language in which it is best known. It reached Western readers in the seventeenth century, when the scholar Henry Sike published a Latin translation along with the Arabic text from a manuscript. After that it entered the study of apocryphal writings, the books that circulated among Christians but did not become part of the accepted canon.

The Arabic itself is probably not the first form of the book. Many scholars think it rests on a Syriac original, and Syriac was a major language of Eastern Christianity. Beyond that, scholars do not fully agree. Some speak of a fifth or sixth century core. Others stress that the Arabic form took its shape later. It is safest to say that the date is uncertain.

The text also does not stand alone. It draws on older infancy stories, above all the Protevangelium of James, which tells of the birth of Mary and Jesus, and the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, which tells of the child Jesus at play and at school. It mixes their material with Gospel scenes and with tales of its own. The result is a patchwork, but a patchwork with a clear aim.

That aim is to show that Jesus was divine and powerful from the first hours of his life. Each episode, in one way or another, serves that claim. Keep this in mind as you listen, because it explains why the stories are shaped as they are.

Questions about The Arabic Infancy Gospel

What is the Arabic Infancy Gospel about?

It tells of the birth and childhood of Jesus, including his speech in the cradle, the visit of the Magi, the flight into Egypt, wonders of his boyhood and his visit among the teachers in the Temple.

Who wrote the Arabic Infancy Gospel and when?

The author is unknown. Many scholars think it rests on a Syriac original and took its Arabic form later, but they do not agree on dates, so the period is uncertain.

Why is the Arabic Infancy Gospel not in the Bible?

The early churches chose the four Gospels as scripture because they were linked to the apostolic age. Infancy gospels appeared later and were treated as devotional legend, though some Eastern communities read them.

Is the Arabic Infancy Gospel a true story?

Historians do not treat its extra episodes as reliable records. They see it as pious legend built on the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and on older infancy tales.

How is it related to the Infancy Gospel of Thomas?

The Arabic text draws on the Infancy Gospel of Thomas and the Protevangelium of James, reusing and reshaping tales of the child Jesus alongside scenes from the canonical Gospels.
