À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

For readers curious about Jewish thought between the Old and New Testaments, anyone who has met the Watchers or the Nephilim and wants the source, and students of the Bible.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

First Enoch is a collection of Jewish writings from the last centuries before Christ, gathered under the name of Enoch. In the book of Genesis, Enoch is the man who walks with God and then is no more, because God takes him. No one knows who wrote these pages. Many hands worked on them over two or three hundred years, and scholars place the oldest sections in the third century BC and the latest around the turn of the era.

The work was most likely composed in Aramaic, with some parts perhaps in Hebrew. It survives complete only in Geez, the ancient language of Ethiopia, translated from Greek. Parts of it also survive in Greek and Latin, and in Aramaic fragments found among the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran. This summary follows the five-part book as the Ethiopic text gives it.

Inside you will meet angels who leave heaven, giants who ravage the earth, and a guided tour of the far corners of the cosmos. You will hear visions of a coming judge, a calendar kept by the stars, a history of Israel told with animals, and warnings to the powerful. Behind it all lies one old question. Where does evil come from, and will it ever be answered? To see how the book hangs together, start with how it is built.

A library of five books under one name

First Enoch is not one book written at one time. It is a collection of five works, and later editors bound them together and placed them under the name of Enoch. The Ethiopic version arranges them in this order. The Book of the Watchers, the Book of Parables, the Astronomical Book, the Dream Visions, and the Epistle of Enoch.

The Aramaic fragments from Qumran show that the earliest parts circulated separately. The Watchers, the Astronomical Book, the Dream Visions, and the Epistle all appear there, in copies from the last centuries before Christ. The Parables are the one section missing from the Qumran caves. That absence is one reason scholars still argue about when they were written.

The Enoch of these pages is a figure drawn from just a few lines in Genesis. There he lives three hundred and sixty-five years, walks with God, and is taken. Later Jewish writers asked where he went and what he saw. Their answer was that he was shown heaven, the stars, the judgment, and the future, and that he wrote it all down.

The name matters because it gives the writings their authority. Enoch lived before the flood and before Moses, so his words claim to come from the oldest time. Modern scholars call this practice pseudonymous writing, and it was common in the ancient world. It means the real authors were unnamed teachers and scribes in the Jewish world, perhaps priestly circles, who spoke through an ancient hero.

So the book is best read as a conversation across generations. Some voices worry about foreign rule and corrupt priests. Others care about the calendar, the stars, and the fate of souls. Together they show how some Jews of that age pictured the order of the world, and what they hoped God would do about its disorder.

Questions about 1 Enoch

What is the Book of Enoch about?

It tells how angels called Watchers descend to earth and father giants, how God judges them, and how Enoch tours heaven and earth. It also holds visions of a coming judge, a star calendar, and a history of Israel.

Who were the Watchers and the Nephilim in Enoch?

The Watchers are angels who leave heaven, led by Semyaza and Azazel, and take human wives. Their children are giants, linked to the Nephilim of Genesis six, who bring violence to the earth before the flood.

Why is the Book of Enoch not in the Bible?

Most Jewish and Christian traditions did not include it in their canons. Reasons given by scholars include its late date, its focus on angels, and its calendar. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church does include it.

When was the Book of Enoch written, and in what language?

Its five parts were written between about the third century BC and the turn of the era, most likely in Aramaic. It survives complete in Geez, with Aramaic fragments at Qumran and some Greek and Latin portions.

Is the Book of Enoch hard to read?

It is a collection of visions, lists, and sermons, and it is built from five separate works. The Book of the Watchers is the easiest place to start, because it tells a clear story of angels, giants, and a flood to come.
