Who Cedric Errol is

Cedric Errol, also called Ceddie, is seven and lives with his mother in New York. They have little money, but their close bond and his neighborhood friendships make his life happy. News that he is heir to an English earl takes him into a world of castles, titles and ceremony.

What Cedric Errol wants

Cedric wants to make people happy, and his new position does not change that wish. He agrees to go to England when his mother explains that he can comfort his lonely grandfather. When he learns that tenants on the estate need help, he asks the Earl to care for them.

Cedric Errol and the others in the story

Cedric calls his mother Dearest, a name he learns from hearing his father use it. She lives near the castle, while the Earl refuses to welcome her into his home. Cedric does not know the reason for their separation, and he loves both his mother and grandfather.

His grandfather expects greed or weakness, but Cedric approaches him with trust and affection. By assuming that the Earl is generous, Cedric gives the proud old man reasons to act more kindly. He also remains loyal to Mr. Hobbs and Dick Brown, his friends from New York.
