Little Dorrit, Chapter 27 summary

Chapter 27 of 70 · Book 1: Poverty · 21 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 27, Arthur Clennam worries about Pancks’s investigations before joining Mr Meagles in searching for Tattycoram, who leaves the family after an angry confrontation. They find her with Miss Wade, but she rejects their appeals to return, while Miss Wade claims that their shared circumstances of birth explain her influence.

What happens

  1. Arthur fears that Pancks’s inquiries concern a possible family wrong, and Little Dorrit’s absence increases his uneasiness.
  2. Mr Meagles reports Tattycoram’s departure and explains his family’s distress over Pet’s attachment to Henry Gowan.
  3. Meagles recounts Tattycoram’s complaints about unequal affection, her name, and her treatment before she leaves his house.
  4. Arthur and Meagles search near Park Lane and find Miss Wade in a house apparently standing empty.
  5. Miss Wade presents returning as submission to humiliation, and Tattycoram refuses repeated appeals to reconsider.
  6. Miss Wade declares a shared grievance connected with birth, then ends the encounter with a hostile remark about Gowan’s wife.
