In Chapter 2, Mr. Meagles and Mr. Clennam exchange personal histories before their quarantine ends, and the travelers share a farewell breakfast in Marseilles. The family’s warmth contrasts with Clennam’s harsh upbringing and Miss Wade’s distrust, while Tattycoram’s angry outburst reveals tension beneath her place in the Meagles household.

What happens

  1. Mr. Meagles complains about quarantine, then explains Tattycoram’s name and how she becomes Pet’s maid.
  2. He describes Pet’s dead twin and the family’s travels for Pet’s health and pleasure.
  3. Clennam describes his harsh parents, unwanted work in China, and lack of purpose.
  4. Officials release the travelers, who gather at a hotel, where Miss Wade challenges Meagles’s belief in forgiveness.
  5. Miss Wade rejects the family’s help and unsettles Pet with talk of unavoidable encounters.
  6. Miss Wade finds Tattycoram raging against the family; Tattycoram retracts her accusations and begs her to leave.
