Little Dorrit, Chapter 13 summary

Chapter 13 of 70 · Book 1: Poverty · 38 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Arthur Clennam visits Christopher Casby and Flora, but the reunion destroys his treasured image of his youthful love and exposes a household concerned with collecting rents. After helping an injured traveler reach hospital, Arthur mourns his empty past without losing his belief in goodness.

What happens

  1. Arthur abandons hope of freeing the Father of the Marshalsea and visits Casby, partly claiming that the visit might help Little Dorrit.
  2. Casby offers no useful information about Little Dorrit, and Arthur suspects that Pancks supplies the energy behind his benevolent appearance.
  3. Flora’s chatter and attempts to revive their romance destroy Arthur’s cherished image, though he recognizes her affection and kindness.
  4. Arthur stays for dinner, hears Pancks defend strict rent collection, and faces the unexplained hostility of Mr. F.’s Aunt.
  5. After leaving with Pancks, Arthur encounters an injured foreign traveler, interprets for him, and stays through his hospital treatment.
  6. At his lodging, Arthur grieves over his lost romantic memory; his door opens as he questions what his life offers.
