In Chapter 3, Jean Valjean clings to daily visits with Cosette, while she and Marius revisit their garden and enjoy their life together. Missing furniture and questions about the couple’s money convince him that he is unwelcome, so he stops visiting and sends reassuring excuses when Cosette asks after him.
What happens
- Marius and Cosette revisit the Rue Plumet garden, leaving Jean Valjean waiting in vain during his usual visiting hour.
- Jean Valjean questions their modest spending and extends his visits by joining Cosette in praising Marius.
- A missing fire and displaced armchairs trouble him, though he offers innocent explanations.
- Cosette reports that Marius asks whether she could live without her own income, deepening Jean Valjean’s suspicions about the money.
- When all the chairs disappear, Jean Valjean covers for their removal, leaves crushed, and stops coming.
- Cosette sends Nicolette to inquire; Jean Valjean claims he is busy and gently corrects her account of his absence.
