In Chapter 1, the narrator compares hidden religious, philosophical, economic, and revolutionary activity to mines beneath society, where unseen workers shape the future. The argument distinguishes visionary pioneers, whose work shares selflessness despite its differences, from a separate and deeper underworld where vision disappears and evil begins.
What happens
- The narrator presents society as a structure resting above hidden workings that can produce good or evil.
- Religious, philosophical, economic, and revolutionary workers transform society beneath an apparently unchanged surface.
- A descending sequence of thinkers shows underground work becoming increasingly uncertain and frightening.
