In Chapter 4, Marius wears his new clothes to the Luxembourg, hoping to impress the young girl, but struggles to approach her bench and passes without looking at her. His attraction unsettles his usual habits, makes him newly conscious of her companion, and distracts him from dinner.
What happens
- Marius puts on new clothes and gloves, then ignores Courfeyrac on his way to the Luxembourg.
- He delays near the fountain before approaching the path where M. Leblanc and the young girl sit.
- After turning back once, he passes their bench twice, blushing, growing pale, and imagining the girl watching him.
- He sits down and resents the apparent indifference to his carefully chosen clothes.
- He considers the gentleman’s possible suspicions and feels that his private name for him is disrespectful.
- Marius returns home, forgets dinner, eats bread, and carefully brushes and folds his coat before bed.
