Book 1: Paris Studied in Its Atom, Chapter 7 of 365 · 3 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 7, the narrator describes Paris street boys as an almost exclusive caste whose members gain standing through unusual experiences, daring, and strength. Their fascination with executions and pride in irreligion reveal a shared code that rewards defiance, memorable accidents, and physical distinction.

What happens

  1. The narrator compares Paris street boys to a caste and dates the printed appearance of gamin to 1834.
  2. Boys win admiration by witnessing accidents, stealing lead, or knowing someone connected with violence.
  3. A contrast between a peasant and a street boy presents the gamin as irreligious and defiant.
  4. Gamins attend executions, climb for better views, mock the condemned, and remember their appearance.
  5. Deep wounds, strong fists, left-handedness, and a squint also earn respect among the boys.
