De quoi parle ce livre ?
What if the sun races across the sky so fast that a mother cannot dry her cloth before dark? In the legends of Maui, the answer is a youngest son with a rope, a stone axe and a grudge against the sun. He is a demigod, but he lives in a leaky grass house.
W. D. Westervelt first printed these stories as magazine articles in Honolulu. He sets the Hawaiian versions beside tellings from New Zealand, Tahiti, Samoa and Tonga. You get tales from Maui's strange birth to his quest for immortality, with chants among the legends.

Point clé 1 sur 8
Maui is the clever youngest of four brothers
Hawaiian tradition names four brothers, all called Maui, and only the youngest matters. From Hawaii to Tonga, Tahiti and New Zealand, this youngest brother is the finder of fire, the snarer of the sun and the fisherman who pulls up islands.
His parents belong to a family of supernatural beings. In the Hawaiian family chant, his father is Akalana and his mother is Hina. Yet Maui is very human. He lives in a thatched house, has a wife and children, and hears the women scold him for bringing home too little food.
New Zealand tells of his birth. He comes too early, and his mother wraps him in a lock of her hair and casts him into the sea. A jellyfish wraps around him, and the god of the seas hangs him from the roof of a house in the warm air of the fire. Years later he creeps into a great gathering, and his mother welcomes him as her son.
He plays tricks from the start. In hide-and-seek, he shrinks to the size of an insect beneath a pile of sticks. Maui is a small, quick, mischievous son whose magic brings practical benefits to ordinary people.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

It collects the stories of the Polynesian demigod Maui. He fishes up islands, lifts the sky, snares the sun, finds fire and seeks immortality, with versions from Hawaii, New Zealand, Tahiti, Samoa and other islands.
Who is Hina in the Maui legends?
Hina is Maui's mother in Hawaii and sometimes his wife or ancestress elsewhere. She is a tapa maker, lives in a cave beneath Rainbow Falls near Hilo, and in many islands is the woman in the moon.

Is Legends of Maui easy to read?
Yes, in the sense that it is made of short, self-contained stories with clear heroes and plain language. Each legend stands alone, so you can read in order or open any chapter, such as Maui and fire.
