King Solomon's Mines, Chapter 13 summary

Chapter 13 of 22 · 13 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Quatermain and his companions help Ignosi’s army repel a three-sided assault, but heavy losses and a failing water supply make their position unsafe. Ignosi chooses an immediate counterattack, using two central regiments to draw attention while other troops move against Twala’s flanks.

What happens

  1. Quatermain shoots an enemy commander, but rifle fire cannot stop the three advancing divisions.
  2. Sir Henry and Good join the central fighting, helping drive the attackers downhill, while the left defense also holds.
  3. When the right defense breaks, Ignosi leads the Greys into a countercharge, during which Quatermain loses consciousness.
  4. Quatermain recovers, hears the casualty estimates, and sees medicine men kill wounded soldiers whose injuries they consider hopeless.
  5. With water running out and Twala receiving reinforcements, Quatermain recommends attacking immediately, and Ignosi designs a coordinated assault.
  6. The army prepares, Good says goodbye, and Sir Henry and Quatermain take their assigned positions.
